Games People Play

Eric Berne

The idea is that a lot of what people do to each other runs on a script, and there is a payoff at the end that both sides are quietly collecting even when it looks like a row nobody wanted.

The one I recognised immediately is the person who asks for advice, and every suggestion you make gets a reason it will not work. I had always read that as them being difficult. Berne's point is that the advice was never what they were after, and if you keep offering it you are playing your half.

The theory around it is very much of its time. I still catch the pattern in conversations now, which is more than I get from most books.
